Two global design awards – in two months – for two vastly different projects!

Two of Cobalt’s recently completed client projects have been recognised with Germany’s top global design awards:
Headlokt being awarded a Red Dot Award, and; magAssist winning an IF Design Award.

magAssist MoyoAssist Extra VAD has been a project highlight of ours for its ability to provide life-saving cardiac support at a more accessible level than current competitors. It’s been a highlight among design critics too, having picked up an Australian Good Design Award, being recognised as Highly Commended at the Victorian Premier’s Design Awards and becoming the ‘USE’ category winner at the Designer’s Australia Awards. But perhaps the most important award came in March, when it was recognised with a prestigious 2024 iF Design Award – a competitive international award program that drew 10,800 entries from 72 countries this year.

This success was made possible through a close collaboration with the magAssist team in Suzhou. Our in-house development team, expertly led by Kynan Taylor and comprising Rob Cuzner, Graeme Marshall, Steve Martinuzzo, Andrew Fanning, and Davis Tolley, played pivotal roles in this achievement. The project’s extensive scope meant that nearly every member of our organisation contributed in some way to its success, showcasing our collective commitment to excellence and innovation.

Headlokt is a more recent project that has been making waves both critically and within the marketplace. As the world’s first helmet that’s also a lock, this came with its own set of aesthetic, safety and functionality challenges. However, the team meticulously resolved all details, concluding with an uncompromising world-first product on store shelves that importantly met all required safety standards.

After achieving an Australian Good Design Award, and a finalist spot in the Victorian Premier’s Design Awards, Headlokt now has a coveted 2024 Red Dot Design Award to its name! A rewarding accomplishment to win such a recognisable and highly regarded international design award.

Headlokt was an ingenious idea thought up by Lisa Cotton, who partnered closely with our project team of Davis Tolley, Graeme Marshall, Andrew Fanning, Mamoru Tanida and project lead, Mark Matthews-Frederick.

These two projects are polar opposites. One, a high-tech medical instrument working with an international client, and the other, a first-of-its-kind consumer product developed with a local visionary. It demonstrates our team’s adaptability, applying our diverse range of expertise and experience to all projects of any category – whether it be medical, consumer, scientific, B2B, or even transport.

We aren’t just MedTech product designers, nor are we just consumer product designers. We’re product designers – of all things, and these two international achievements are recognition of this.
