The problem with Imaging Systems, like all molecular biology technology, is finding a balance between price and quality. Finding the tools to perform multiplex fluorescent western blotting, chemiluminescence detection and general gel documentation, all in a way that’s stain-free and cost effective seemed almost impossible – until Bio-Rad partnered with Cobalt to create ChemiDoc.

The ChemiDoc Imagers work to detect specific proteins within biological tissue or extract samples. This allows molecular biologists to identify similarities between various tissue samples, or even detect biological anomalies where they occur.

Through vigorous testing and experimentation, Cobalt designed and engineered the ChemiDoc Imagers to be faster, cheaper, and perform the tasks that would normally need multiple systems.

Fluorescent imaging allows researchers to quantify and analyse multiple proteins in a single measurement, without having to strip, re-probe or cut membranes to measure different proteins.

The internal components, such as the Smart Tray Technology™ keeps the machine versatile, whilst keeping cost down for the manufacturers and the consumers. Complete with touchscreen graphic user interface (GUI), our designers helped bring Bio-Rad’s already leading Imaging technology into the modern era.

Researchers can often find themselves queuing to get their hands on lab equipment. By streamlining the machine into a compact form, we’ve made it quicker to set up, and the internal components accurately image blots and gels faster than ever before. Its compact nature makes it cost efficient, leading researchers to describe the machine as “an indispensable part of any lab.”

Experimentation: the key to discovery

Any scientist will tell you that experiments are crucial to success. Cobalt experimented with a range of HDR Camera technologies, including the Sony Starvis range to really find the “sweet spot” between value and quality. Nine different models were considered during development, the final product being the most cost effective yet efficient model throughout the prototyping phase. Every model was judged not only on its final return-on-investment for Bio-Rad, but also its appeal to the consumer – both in terms of technical quality and value for money.

The ChemiDoc Imagers make blot imaging as easy as molecular biology can be. Its robust features and compact, ergonomic design make it a revolution in molecular biology, enabling researchers to gather more data more quickly and with unparalleled accuracy.
